“Paleo” Homemade BBQ Sauce

paleo homemade bbq sauce

I’m not sure about all this Paleo stuff-I just can’t devour things with corn, gluten, refined sugar. . .among other things.  Which is why reading ingredient labels has become the quickest way to bring a cloud of sadness over me-they are filled with the very things I cannot eat.

BBQ sauce is no exception.  Sure, a lot of sauces have nixed the high fructose corn syrup, but many of them still contain some sort of corn derivative like corn starch.  So I went on a mini mission to make some corn-free, yuck-free BBQ sauce that was delicious enough to trick my husband into believing it was a Mr. Stubbs double.

Paleo Homemade BBQ Sauce

1 cup plain spaghetti sauce

1/4 cup vegetable stock

3 Tablespoons molasses

2 Tablespoons Vinegar (apple cider or red wine)

1 Tablespoon Agave Nectar

2 teaspoons paprika (smoked paprika is delicious)

1 teaspoon dry mustard seed (powder)

Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan over low heat for about 8 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Turn down to a simmer for 20 minutes  to reduce by 20% (basically it will be thicker)
  3. Use liberally on all things (are there any exceptions?  No.)
